  22. I hope they will get a better interpreter. He kept missing the point. The band members were saying so much more than the interpreter could deliver.

  23. I could listen to Jaya speak for hours. He has beautiful enunciation and diction. And no, I don’t speak Mongolian.

  24. I love your sound and your message! If you never ever sing in any other language, I will still love your sound and your message! I do not need to understand the words to feel what you are saying. As you guys have said before, music crosses boundaries and borders to bring souls together. Never change!

  25. Амжилт залуусаа. Санаагаа тод бас монголын урлаг хөгжмийн талаар сайхан тодорхой хиллээ. Даанч орчуулга муу байлаа.

  26. Congratulations to The Hu. But translator is not good enough in my opinion. He could not explain the band's some main nuance. It is really dissappointing. Band members talked some things but it is translated wrongly such as they said that make throat singing in other languages is may not be good sound than singing in mongolian language. So they prefer the native language and culture and will sing song in Mongolian language, it will give more happiness to the music lovers. Inversely the translator just said and mean that it is diffucult to singing in foreign language. It is little weird and rude.

  30. Hey, everyone! I am so proud that our Hu band gave an interview at Google. I wanted to contribute to the translations but the CC is not available for the community, so I will try my best to get the message across, I know oral translations are more difficult than written ones and I am proud of the translator 🙂 and he also tries to explain the concepts easily, so his translations are actually pretty good. It is common for some meanings to be lost in translation. I will try my best, I hope you guys all enjoy. It would also be great if more Mongolians could add on top of this and correct me if I am wrong in any way.

    Interview:

    Galbadrakh/Galaa

16:11 Our musical instruments are passed down to us by our ancestors for thousands of years. This is a true Mongolian ethnic musical instrument.

16:35 As for our traditional morin khuur, the horse head faces forward and the color is mostly brown to light brown.

16:58 For our Hunnu rock music genre, for our Hu band, the sound and acoustics of the traditional instrument/ethnic root were kept.

17:24 The reason is that our Hunnu rock connects the ancient and the modern times, the west and east, therefore it needed to look more rock and have modern designs. This was based on the ideas of our producer and the shape of the horse head and using the traditional techniques, silver coatings/ornaments were inserted.

18:40 Of course, there are many bands. When we were studying at the music school, we listened to many rock and metal bands and we played the guitars and tested/played around/experimented with lots of different sounds.

19:01 Naming them all would continue endlessly but for example, Metallica, Slipknot, Tool, Korn, Sepultura, Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, Foo Fighters, AC/DC.

    Nyamjantsan/Jaaya

19:43 First of all, I am very happy to be meeting you all in this great hall, sitting in front of this crowd. This is an honour for our band and also for our Mongolian nation. To come to this Google company and meeting you all.

20:12 So, for Mongolians, khuumii is a very important art form. This is the culture and tradition of the Mongol people settling around/surrounding the Altai mountains.

20:32 So, the centre or the origin is in Mongolia because the Altai mountain is in Mongolia. There are ethnic groups/nationalities that sing khuumii in different styles, such as Mongols and Tuvans. But mostly, it only exists among the people surrounding the Altai mountains.

21:07 Otherwise, it is the same "throat singing" but another variation. Mongols sing khuumii on a higher note, meanwhile the Tuvans sing a lower note.

21:27 Generally speaking, it is like this. There is a reason for us choosing khuumii as the main vocal technique/method for our Hunnu Rock genre. The reason is that, as you all know well, we sing in our own language, Mongolian. The art of khuumii best fits with the Mongolian language, that is why for us there is not much need for us to sing in another language, that is why we are only given the certain conditions/opportunities to sing and do throat-singing in Mongolian.

22:07 That is the Mongolian khuumii.

22:22 All of us graduated from music school, so we all have a background in music, starting from our childhood until we acquired our master's degree.

22:44 For example, our Galaa and Temka were classmates for over 10 years at the Music and Dance College of Mongolia.

23:00 As it was said before, that we formed bands, the two of them formed a band and were playing the guitars together.

23:11 Our Enkhuush also studied at the music school since a young age and continued with college and graduated from the university. He is a professional Morin Khuur player and throat-singer.

23:30 As for me, it is the same for me too, I also graduated from college and university. I also taught at the Conservatoire for 10 years. I am older compared to them.

23:55 Up until now, we have played instruments/performed together in the ethnic style/genre because our heart is one and we understand and respect each other. We truly love the individual talents of one another.

24:22 In 2016, when the Hu band was being formed, all of a sudden, we have called out for each other and came together. The reason is our hearts and our music connects us and we are gathered here together through our love for one another just as we love our musical instruments.

25:02 In the end, I want to say that, the reason why we are successful today and why our music is reaching the people, is that when we are creating our music, there is no argument, we feel each other's hearts and their music and sound, so all our music is sound from the heart. So that is why, even when we don't understand the language, the soul meets soul and heart meets heart and that is why I think it is easy for it to reach the hearts of the people.

26:25 So our producer is a man named Dashka. Not only is he the producer but he is also the band member. So, he gives all his heart and soul to this.

26:51 We discuss within ourselves and experiment a lot with the sounds and sometimes, we would be writing a song for a week but record it and test it 2 to 3 times, there are times like this.

27:29 Our ancestors have a great history and brought wonderful things into this world. For instance, during the reign of the Great Chinggis Khaan, there is a pass named

Gerege used for entering the Empire freely.

27:56 And after that, many other great deeds were done by them, international trade, Silk road, Yam-relay station (Yam (Mongolian: Өртөө, Örtöö, checkpoint) was a supply point route messenger system extensively used and expanded by Genghis Khan and also used by subsequent Great Khans and Khans. Relay stations provided food, shelter and spare horses for Mongol army), postal system and there was only one king who accepted all the religions in the world and that was Chinggis Khan.

28:40 Just like this, we sing about our ancestor's wonderful deeds. Second of all, the main message we want to deliver is about how we must love our nature and Earth. Moreover, it is about all people holding their hands and uniting to fight against the injustices in the world and we want to give that strength to them. Everyone has a warrior spirit/soul inside and we are singing for them. It is for strengthening the people and many people are fighting against difficult illnesses and we create our art and music wishing to give all the good energy, strength and power to these people.

30:39 It has been a month since our US tour started. We believe we made great progress during this time. The reason is, based on our statistics, the US audience is the most active and most encouraging fans of us. That is why we feel so connected and close to the people here because we are with the audience we love and we are truly happy that all our fans are so aware of our music.

31:40 All of our concerts and performances are successful and wonderful, even though we are meeting the audience the first time, they are welcoming us by chanting Hu Hu and waiting for us to come on the stage. When we see them becoming our listeners and fans, we get goosebumps and everyday we are full of energy to perform.

32:24 I feel like other nations/countries seem to like our mother tongue and culture. We sing in our mother language and the lyricism of our Mongolian language has helped us achieve this amount of success. This is our main weapon.

  31. These guys are amazing! I wanna know where they get their wardrobes…. but more importantly, who they are Musically influenced by and if they'll be coming to the Midwest! 🙂

  32. These guys are great! Seriously. Something new and unique with a good sound! And if I heard them correctly when the one guy was naming bands that influenced them I could have sworn I heard him say KoRn. And hey, KoRn has been my favorite band for 25 years.. if these guys were inspired by KoRn, that just makes me like them even more! 🙂
