Augmented reality is this technology which consists of superimposing digital information on top of reality. It’s been a few years now that it has landed on your smartphones and if the technology has nevertheless been rather discreet until now, augmented reality glasses could well replace your smartphones in the next few years. But what about this technology today ? You may well be surprised! Indeed, technology has made huge leaps forward in recent months both on the software side and on the hardware side with more and more big players embarking on the adventure. I start with a small point on entertainment content. Pokemon Go, does that speak to you? Remember, this international hit released in 2016 by Niantic proposed to catch pokemons which were superimposed on top of your device. In a similar vein, look now at Mojang’s much more recently released : Minecraft Earth. The progress is impressive, it is no more about superimposing an image on top of another in an archaic way, Minecraft Earth takes advantage of the camera and mobile augmented reality kits to offer an exceptional inlay of the game, in real time and with multiplayer. Amazing isn’t it? It is a bit as if Minecraft came to life in a persistent way in our universe and it is not without recalling an experiment of Microsoft on its Hololens glasses which shows that the technology is ready and that as soon as it will be accessible to the general public, we can imagine walking in the streets around us while admiring the real constructions of other players, while being careful while crossing the road of course. But that’s not all, the company Magic Leap also offers games in augmented reality bluffing through its glasses, the Magic Leap One. Look for example at the Strangelets experience of Insomniac Games, to whom we owe the latest game SpiderMan or Stormland and which offers to live a real cinematics interacting on the objects of your accommodation. And before talking about the hardware of tomorrow, I will come back to the hardware already available. Of course, you have your smartphones that already allow you to experience augmented reality through your screen associated with your camera. But many pairs of augmented reality glasses are already on sale mainly on the professional market. The most advanced technology is undoubtedly Microsoft with the HoloLens 2 which are just arriving for a price of around 3500 €. If we could criticize the first iteration for displaying digital information on a field of view that is far too small, it becomes acceptable with the 52° field of view and a resolution of 2048x1080px per eye. Above all, the Snapdragon 850 portable processor allows it to run an operating system and performance-hungry experiences. Finally, these autonomous augmented reality glasses understand the movements of your hands to interact with virtual volumes but also recognize your voice for vocal interactions with Cortana. Imagine tomorrow’s lessons, all in holograms. Imagine also taking augmented tutorials, digital training, holographic history lessons or even prototyping your future creative productions. And these are only uses among many others that augmented reality can offer. Besides, the big digital players are not mistaken. If I have already spoken at length about Microsoft, Apple, Google and Facebook are already well engaged in this technology. Apple and Google are using iOS and Android respectively to prepare the coming of their augmented reality glasses of tomorrow while Facebook is said to be developing its own operating system specifically for this technology according to the latest rumors. Apple has also made a big move for 2019’s summer by presenting the ARKit 3 and the RealityKit framework which provide 2 essential features for the future of augmented reality : the occlusion of bodies, that is to say the ability to detect when a body passes between the camera and the digital object to be able to naturally mask the latter, but also the application of a digital image processing adapted to the environment and the focus of the camera to give with the inlay a photorealistic rendering of the most beautiful effect. Rumor talks about Apple’s and Facebook first augmented reality glasses by 2023. As for Google, the company has continued to develop its ARCore framework which now makes it possible to recognize any volume in an environment and then adapt the digital content. The particles bounce off the sets, the occlusions between real and virtual objects are natural. It’s looking very awesome, don’t you think? So if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to subscribe, and we finally finish with what is for me the most beautiful announcement: the announcement of the XR2 by the manufacturer Qualcomm. The Snapdragon XR2 is a mobile processor specially designed for cross reality ‘XR’ or mixed reality. I will not go into the detailed characteristics of this miniature processor but tell yourself that roughly, it doubles the computing power compared to current standards. So it’s almost a mini pc that could integrate the branches of a pair of glasses. But above all, the XR2 is optimized for the 5G standard. 5G is the network that will soon replace 4G and, in addition to a much higher speed, it especially offers connectivity with virtually no latency, with no noticeable response time. It will therefore be quite possible to walk in a real environment, that the video live stream goes into a datacenter to be interpreted with an AI that would understand in real time the environment in which you are to display in the glasses the digital components that integrate perfectly into your environment. Come on, we will not lie, this video representation is probably still a little too optimistic as the ability to adapt the application to your environment seems complex. but everything that appears here in the demonstration of Qualcomm would actually be possible on paper and it is therefore probably not for nothing that Niantic, you know the company behind Pokemon Go that I mentioned earlier, decided to partner with Qualcomm to design glasses of augmented reality associated with services in the Cloud.
